- Initial policy objection to a bar-restaurant use was overcome by deployment of conservation arguments. Grade II* building on site of medieval castle gatehouse and Durham Cathedral,
and located adjacent to Durham world heritage site. Great care needed to be taken
with a 17th Century medieval well staircase also located on site.
- Planning consent for conversion of A3 (pub/restaurant) was then obtained.
