An example of facilitating a new use in a sensitive town centre site
Initial policy objection to a bar-restaurant use was overcome by deployment of conservation arguments.
This is a Grade II* listed building on the site of medieval castle gatehouse and Durham Cathedral, and located adjacent to Durham World Heritage site. Great care was needed to be taken with a 17th Century medieval well staircase also located on site.
Planning consent for conversion of A3 (pub-restaurant) was then obtained.
